Social Security’s a Vital Lifeline for Older Women

The Alan Simpsons and John Boehners of the world talk about raising the retirement age and cutting Social Security benefits for “greedy geezers.” If they have their way and the federal budget deficit commission—of which Simpson is co-chairman—ends up recommending raising the retirement age, cutting benefits or even privatizing Social Security, women will be the hardest hit.

Here are some sobering statistics from Retirement USA and the Social Security Administration (SSA) that show just how vital Social Security is to older women.

The estimated income that older Americans need to meet basic needs, depending on homeowner status, is between $16,163 and $20,869, according to the Elder Economic Security Standard™ Index.

But half the women ages 65 and older have an annual income of less than $14,429 (men’s median income is $25,344). On top of that, 11 percent of women 65 years and older live below the federal poverty line of $10,326 for single persons ages 65 and older. That is well below what is necessary to meet basic needs.

Unlike Simpson, who receives a hefty government-paid congressional pension check each month, the average “greedy” female “geezer” receives $12,012 a year in Social Security benefits. The average benefit for men is $15,588. Keep in mind that’s not free money. It represents what we put into Social Security over a lifetime of work—and for women, a lifetime of work earning less than men, too. Not exactly “milking” the system, as Simpson rants about seniors.

In 2008, 46 percent of all unmarried females receiving Social Security benefits relied on Social Security for 90 percent or more of their income. Only 23 percent also received private pension benefits along with their Social Security benefits.

How can the politicians and pundits attacking Social Security make such ridiculous claims or even begin to think about cutting benefits? Richard Abrams, a Social Security expert at the University of California, Berkeley, has a darn sound explanation. He told Newsweek’s Ben Adler:

These guys are somewhat not in touch with the real world. They live in a somewhat isolated world. They are very wealthy and are not attuned to the needs of working people. Simpson is long out of the days when he has had to earn money from outside the government.

Abrams compares Simpson’s canard of seniors “milking” Social Security to Ronald Reagan’s apocryphal Cadillac-driving welfare queen.

The commission will make its recommendations to the president and Congress in December. Congressional supporters of strengthening Social Security are gearing up for a fight.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) is proposing a resolution to stop raising the retirement age. Also, Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) is circulating a letter to be sent to the president opposing privatizing Social Security, raising the retirement age and cutting benefits.

Ketiganya jika terbukti melanggar Undang-undang 23 Tahun 1992 tentang Kesehatan dan UU No 8 Tahun 1999 tentang Perlindungan Konsumen, yaitu diancam dengan hukuman pidana 5 tahun penjara atau denda maksimal sebanyak Rp 2 miliar. Munculnya kasus penyalahgunaan nomor registrasi sebagai obat tradisonal (fitofarmaka) dengan mencampurkan bahan kimia obat (BKO) yang seharusnya tidak boleh dikonsumsi tanpa resep dokter ini, memunculkan pertanyan dari banyak pihak, terkait proses perijinan yang dilakukan oleh BPOM. Meskipun jika ditelusur, sebenarnya sudah sangat jelas bahwa kesalahan terjadi pada pihak produsen. Hal ini mengingat bahwa ’perjanjian’ yang sebelumnya dilakukan pada saat registrasi ialah sebagai obat tradisional yang mana dalam proses pembuatannya hanya berasal dari bahan-bahan alami. Namun dalam kenyatannya, dengan sengaja ditambahkan bahan-bahan kimia seperti sildenafil sulfat, tadalafil, sibutramin, hidroklorida, siproheptadin, fenilbutason, asam mefenamat, predalson, metampiron, teofilin, dan parasetamol.Adanya pembatalan perjanjian yang dilakukan oleh produsen ini, jelas menunjukan bahwa faktor ekonomi lebih dipilih sebagai tujuan utama perusahaan. Dengan menambahkan sedikit saja bahan-bahan kimia diatas, maka fungsi atau efek yang akan diperoleh oleh konsumen lebih cepat terasakan. Dengan ini, konsumen dengan yakin akan menyimpulkan bahwa ’jamu’ yang dibeli adalah benar-benar manjur, sehingga berikutnya akan mengkonsumsi lagi, dan lagi. Selain itu, dengan mendaftarkan sebagai obat tradisional (yang ditandai dengan adanya logo hijau) tentunya akan lebih mudah didapatkan oleh konsumen, karena tidak hanya tersedia di apotek-apotek resmi, tetapi dapat juga diperoleh di toko-toko obat. Artinya secara ekonomi, cara seperti ini akan lebih mendatangkan banyak keuntungan bagi pihak produsen.Belum selesai kasus penarikan obat kuat ini dari pasaran, BPOM kembali mengumumkan adanya penemuan bahan kimia berbahaya seperti merkuri (Hg), hidrokinon, asam retinoat, dan pewarna rhodamin B (merah K.3 dan K.10) pada produk kosmetika. Kasus penyalahgunaan bahan kimia terlarang ini menunjukan bahwa dalam sistem perdagangan kita masih mengutamakan faktor keuntungan semata, tanpa mempertimbangkan efek yang diterima oleh konsumen, terutama dalam jangka panjang.Seperti yang telah kita ketahui bersama, bahwa penggunaan bahan-bahan kimia tersebut, dapat menimbulkan berbagai gangguan. Untuk zat merkuri dapat berdampak mulai dari bintik hitam pada kulit, alergi, iritasi kulit, sampai pada kerusakan permanen susunan saraf, otak, ginjal, dan gangguan janin (teratogenik). Untuk pewarna rhodamin B pada konsentrasi yang tinggi dapat menyebabkan kerusakan hati dan bersifat karsinogenik sedangkan asam retinoat dapat menyebabkan kulit kering dan rasa terbakar. Khusus untuk zat kimia hidrokuinon (sebagai pemutih) sementara ini masih diperbolehkan asal tidak melebihi batas maksimal yaitu 2 %, akan tetapi kedepan sedang diusulkan untuk dilarang. Hal ini setidaknya akan menjadikan tugas pengawasan BPOM menjadi bertambah.Kebohongan publikSebagi produk yang memiliki banyak khasiat, produk obat-obatan termasuk kosmetika memiliki cara dan aturan tersendiri dalam mengiklankan kepada masyarakat. Artinya, dalam setiap melakukan promosi, baik melalui media massa dan elektronik maupun melalui penjualan langsung oleh medical representative, haruslah berupa informasi yang objektif, lengkap, dan tidak menyesatkan. Secara umum, iklan obat bebas hendaknya bermanfaat bagi masyarakat dalam memilih obat secara rasionalDengan semakin terbukanya era informasi, maka masyarakat dapat mengakses informasi langsung dari sumbernya, dalam hal ini BPOM sebagai sumber rujukan utama akan kebenaran dari promo-promo yang disampaikan oleh pihak produsen. Seperti telah kita ketahui bersama bahwa sifat suatu iklan ialah menawarkan dengan berbagai cara yang kreatif, sehingga masyarakat tertarik untuk membeli dan mencoba produk tersebut. Akan tetapi proses kreatif itu tetap dibatasi oleh peraturan yang belaku.Adanya kasus ’penipuan’ massal yang ditelah dilakukan oleh produsen obat kuat maupun kosmetika, menunjukan bahwa proses pengontrolan atas iklan yang beredar belum berfungsi efektif dilakukan oleh BPOM. Disisi lain, tumbuhnya kesadaran dari pihak produsen dalam membuat iklan yang bersifat edukatif, informatif, dan fakta sebenarnya masih sangat rendah. Maka kesadaran bersama oleh masyarakat menjadi satu keharusan agar selalu cermat dalam setiap menerima informasi dari suatu produk yang ditawarkan.Resistensi masyarakat CIALISALAT BANTU SEXAkhir-akhir ini sering terdengar dikeluarkannya peringatan publik oleh BPOM. Adanya public warning ini, disatu sisi menunjukan signal positif perbaikan kinerja BPOM sebagai badan pengawas, namun disisi lain juga memunc ulkan satu kekhawatiran adanya resistensi masyarakat terhadap isi dari peringatan tersebut. Ibarat iklan yang terus menerus disampaikan, seringkali menjadi OBAT PELANGSING VIMAX diabaikan disebabkan pengulangan-pengulangan (repeating) tersebut cenderung membosankan. Oleh karena itu, untuk meminimalisir adanya resistensi ini, perlu adanya tindakan nyata dari pihak pemerintah, dalam hal ini BPOM dan aparat penegak hukum, untuk menindak tegas para pelaku dari setiap kasus serta mengusutnya hingga tuntas, sehingga dikemudian hari tidak akan muncul lagi kasus – kasus yang serupa meski dengan ’wajah’ yang berbeda.OBAT PEMBESAR
