Ways organizations can participate

Do you think Washington is not paying attention to the real problems of retirement?  “Wake up, Washington!” Month, a speak-out about retirement security, is being held from September 15-October 15 so that Americans of all ages can tell lawmakers to keep their hands off of Social Security and to fix our patchwork private retirement system.

Here’s what you can do to wake up Washington:
  • Spread the word about “Wake Up, Washington!” Month in your organizational newsletters. We will have sample articles you can post in your newsletters.
  • Encourage your members to tell us their story. The Retirement USA website will host a collection of personal stories from people who are concerned about retirement security.  Tell your members about the story bank and encourage them to contribute to it.
  • Have your members post videos. Retirement USA will also host videos.  Encourage your members to create videos of their retirement stories to add to the story bank.
  • Write blog entries. Do you have a blog?  If so, write about the retirement security crisis throughout the month and use your blog to start a conversation about retirement security.  We can provide you with sample blog entries.
  • Write op-eds and letters to the editor. Spread the word about the nation’s retirement income security crisis and how it affects you by submitting op-eds and letters to the editor to your favorite news publications.  We can suggest topics for you to write about and provide you with samples.
  • Use Facebook and Twitter. Are you on Facebook and Twitter?  Use Facebook and Twitter to discuss the activities taking place throughout “Wake Up, Washington!” Month with #RUSA as the hashtag.  Like what we’re saying? Let your friends know by liking or retweeting our posts.
  • Go to town hall meetings and attend candidate forums. Let elected officials and candidates for office know that retirement issues should be a priority for them.
Make your voice heard! If you would like to participate in “Wake Up, Washington!” Month or if you have questions, please send an e-mail to info@retirement-usa.org.
